Ancient history and settlement.

Before 1957, Tarangire was famous hunting area and pastoralist grazing land.In 1957-Became a Game Reserve (tourist game hunting land). Declared a National Park in 1970, purposely to protect the dry season wildlife refuge (Tarangire River and Extensive swamps). The name of the park originates from the Tarangire River that crosses the park. This park is also known as the ‘home of elephants’ due to large population of elephants in the park.

Tarangire National Park is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania with a size of 2850 square kilometers. It is located in Manyara Region, 118 km (75Miles) Southwest of Arusha.

Tarangire encompasses critical dry season wetlands (extensive swamps) and the Tarangire River system. 80% of all wildlife leaves the National Park and head into areas outside the park for nutritious pasture and calving from mid November to end of May.

In the dry season, (July-October) as water outside the park become scarce animals move into the park where permanent water sources exis
