Rongai route starts in the northern side of the mountain slightly south of the Kenyan border; the route is one of the less traveled routes on the mountain and it is simpler than Machame route giving it a higher success rate. Rongai route joins Marangu route at the summit stage, then you descend following Marangu route. This route is normally done in 6 days but some choose to do it in 7 days. The only difference between Rongai 6 day and 7-day routes is the fact that some choose to add an acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn.

On this day you will be transferred from the airport to your hotel in Arusha; you can decide to spend the day relaxing or exploring the city.
Day 1: Arusha – Nale Moru (1950m) – Simba Camp (2626m)
After an early start you will be driven from Arusha to the Village of Nale Moru where the ascent up Rongai road begins. You will trek through farmland before entering pine forests; in the forest you may see beautiful Colobus monkeys as you go past the trees. The forest begins to thin before reaching Simba Camp(2626 m) after 4 to 5 hours of trekking. Simba Camp which is located at the edge of the moorland is where dinner and overnight stay will be enjoyed.
Day 2: Simba Camp (2626 m) – Kikelewa Camp (3630m)
You will leave SImba Camp in the morning heading to Kikelewa Camp which is about 8km away. You will arrive at the second cave around lunchtime;here you will rest, have lunch and observe Kibo and the easter icefields. After lunch you will embark on a 3-5 hours trek traversing the moorland before reaching Kikelewa Camp (3630m) where dinner and overnight stay will be enjoyed.
Day 3: Kikelewa Camp (3630m) – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4310m)
You will embark on a short steep ascent up a grassy landscape that offers a great view of the wilderness area. The vegetation zone ends shortly before reaching Mawenzi Tarn Camp which is directly below the towering cliffs of Mawenzi peak. In the afternoon you can opt to rest or go out and explore the surrounding in order to aid acclimatization. Dinner and overnight stay at Mawenzi Tarn Camp.
You can choose to add an additional day here at Mawenzi Tarn in order to help your body acclimatize better; this will prolong your trip by one day.
Day 4: Shira Camp 2 (3900m) – Lava Tower (4,630 m) – Moir Hut (4200m)
You will leave the camp across the almost plantless saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo; after trekking for a number of hours you Kibo Hut(4700m) which is a place where you can enjoy a spectacular view of Kibo summit. The trek from Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut take about 4 to 5 hours. The rest of the day will be spent preparing for the final climb which begins around midnight.
Day 5: Kibo Hut (4700m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Horombo Hut (3700m)
This night you will head out in the night to begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. You will ascend a long strenuous terrain that is heavy in scree; around sunrise you will reach Gilman’s Point(5715m) after having passed by Hans Meyer Cave(5220m) – Gilmans point is on the crater rim of Mount Kilimanjaro. After Gilman’s point you will continue trekking for 1 to 2 hours before reaching Uhuru Peak(5895m); here you will be standing on the “Roof of Africa”.Upon returning to Kibo Hut you will be served a warm meal and then you will rest for 1 – 2 hours before proceeding with the descent to Horombo Hut where you will arrive in the afternoon.
Day 6: Horombo Hut (3700m) – Marangu Gate (1860m) – Arusha
On this day you will descend through the heath and moorlands before reaching Mandara Hut where lunch will be served. After lunch you will proceed with the descent through the rainforest before reaching Marangu gate after 6 hours of trekking. At Marangu gate our driver will transfer you to your hotel in Arusha where after a long hot shower you will spend the remainder of the day leisurely celebrating the fact that you conquered the mighty Kilimanjaro.
Departure Day: Arusha – Kilimanjaro Airport
After breakfast is served you will be transferred to the airport to catch your flight back home. Airport transfer time will depend on the departure schedule of your flight.
